Electric bike specifications - what they mean

• Motor and torque (Nm): the motor provides the assistance, and torque is the pulling force you feel on hills and from a standing start. Higher torque, often around 40 to 85 Nm, means easier climbing and stronger acceleration when you are carrying a load.
• Battery (Wh) and range: watt-hours (Wh) measure how much energy the battery holds. A bigger battery generally means more range, so a bike with more Wh will usually take you further between charges.
• Pedal-assist: the motor helps only while you pedal and cuts the assistance at 25 km/h. As long as the continuous power stays at or under 250 W, the bike is legally a bicycle in Estonia, with no licence, registration or insurance required. Above those limits it is classed as a moped.
• Frame type (step-through vs classic): a step-through frame has a low bar that is easy to mount and comfortable for city use, while a classic diamond frame is stiffer and better suited to sportier riding.
• Brakes: hydraulic disc brakes give the strongest, most consistent stopping power, especially in the wet, while mechanical disc and rim brakes are simpler to service.
• Gears: more gears give you a wider range for hills and higher speeds. A derailleur setup suits varied terrain, while fewer gears keep maintenance low for flat city riding.
• Tyres: narrow tyres roll fast on tarmac, all-round tyres balance grip and speed, and fat tyres add grip and cushioning for sand, gravel, snow and rough trails.
• Weight and removable battery: lighter bikes are easier to carry and lift, and a removable battery lets you charge indoors and lock it away, which is handy if you park in a shed, hallway or flat.
