Electric mountain bike specifications - what they mean

  • Stronger motor and torque (Nm) - torque is what pulls you up steep, loose climbs. A higher figure (often around 40-95 Nm on trail e-bikes) means the bike keeps going where a weaker motor would stall, so pick more torque if you ride real hills.
  • Front or full suspension - a front-suspension hardtail is lighter, simpler and better value, and handles gravel and moderate singletrack well. Full suspension adds a rear shock for extra control and comfort on rough, technical descents.
  • Wide knobby tyres - deep, chunky tread grips mud, gravel and roots and lets you run lower pressure for traction. For the widest tyres for deep snow and sand, see our fatbikes.
  • Hydraulic disc brakes - strong, consistent stopping in the wet and on long descents, with far less hand effort than rim or mechanical brakes, so you stay in control when it counts.
  • Gears - a wide gear range lets you spin easily uphill and keep pace on the flats. The motor supplies the muscle while the gears fine-tune your pedalling cadence.
  • Sturdy frame - a reinforced frame and quality fork are built to absorb trail impacts and cope with the extra weight and pulling force of the motor, for a bike that lasts.
  • Battery and range on trails - a bigger battery means more range, but hills, mud, headwinds and cold all cut real-world distance. Treat any quoted range as an up-to, best-case figure and size the battery to how far you actually ride.

Which model is right for you?

  • New to trails or weekend forest rides - a front-suspension hardtail e-MTB. Lighter, simpler and great value, with plenty of capability for gravel tracks and moderate singletrack.
  • Technical, rough descents and all-mountain riding - a full-suspension e-MTB for maximum control and comfort over roots, rocks and steep drops.
  • Long climbs and off-road touring - a high-torque model with a larger battery so you can ride further and higher without running flat.
  • Commuting plus weekend trails - a versatile trail e-bike. If you mostly ride tarmac, paths and the city, browse the wider electric bikes range instead.
  • Winter, snow, sand or very soft ground - consider a fat-tyre model. See fatbikes for the widest tyres and the most grip in tough conditions.

An electric mountain bike is an off-road bike with a pedal-assist motor that gives you a boost as you pedal. It pairs a rugged frame, suspension, knobby tyres and powerful brakes with a battery and motor so climbs and long trail rides feel far easier.
Yes. A front-suspension hardtail e-MTB is a great starting point: it is lighter, simpler to look after and good value, and the motor flattens the hills so you can enjoy the trail while you build fitness and skills.
A front-suspension hardtail is lighter, cheaper and ideal for gravel and moderate singletrack. Full suspension adds a rear shock for more control and comfort on rough, technical descents. Choose based on how demanding your usual trails are.
It varies by battery size, terrain and assist level. Manufacturers quote an up-to figure that is a best case; steep climbs, mud, cold weather and higher assist all reduce real-world range, so pick a larger battery if you ride long or hilly routes. Each product page lists its own battery details.
For climbing, torque (measured in Nm) matters more than headline watts. More torque means the bike pulls you up steep, loose sections without stalling, so if you ride real hills, prioritise a higher-torque motor.
The knobby trail tyres handle mud, gravel and light snow well. For deep snow, ice or sand you want the widest tyres for maximum grip - see our fatbikes collection.
Street-legal pedal-assist models generally assist up to 25 km/h with a 250 W nominal motor; more powerful off-road builds are intended for private land and trails. For everyday street-legal models, see our full electric bikes range.
Standard street-legal pedal-assist e-bikes usually do not require registration or insurance, but rules depend on the model and how you ride it. Check current local requirements, and browse our electric bikes range for compliant everyday options.
Keep the drivetrain clean and lubricated, check brake pads and tyre pressure regularly, and store and charge the battery according to the manual. Our in-house service team can handle servicing, repairs and any warranty work.
Yes, a trail e-MTB is versatile enough for mixed use. If most of your riding is on tarmac, paths and in the city, a dedicated model from our electric bikes range will suit you better.
Yes. We deliver nationwide from our online store, typically in 1-3 business days, and you can pay by instalments or pay in three to spread the cost.
